Features
“Shadow and Light” – Pitch – rights from Nick Non Sternberg JOSEF VON STERNBERG, the fabled Hollywood film director, one of the original riding crop boys, almost lost his mind directing his masterpiece “The Blue Angel” in Berlin in 1929. Director of “Underworld”, “The Last Command”, “Morocco”, “Shanghai Express” and “Blonde Venus”, Von Sternberg faced personal and professional crises in the late twenties. The son of an artist and an artist himself, Joe made a career out of putting the captivating images in his head on the film screen. But now the advent of talking pictures may put an end to his image-driven career. Now they’re bringing out stage directors and actors from the New York theatre.

Movies are about actors talking. His freewheeling camera is now bolted into an unmovable soundproof box, from which the director/cameraman emerges sweating and panting for air every few minutes. And his mind seems no longer his own. Everywhere he looks he sees paintings yet to be born. Beautiful paintings of places he has never been, people he has never known. Hallucinations, mind-wanderings, daydreams, whatever they are, they haunt him, they pursue him down every alley. His marriage is being threatened by recurring images of a woman, blonde, lithe, beautiful cheekbones and limpid eyes… Who is she? Does she exist?

Joe’s “Last Patrol” star Emil Jannings has returned to his native Germany. Jannings now chooses his old nemesis Joe von Sternberg to direct his new talking film at the great UFA studio in Berlin.
